INSTEAD OF ADVANCED IP SCANNER

An alternative to Advanced IP Scanner

For when the job is: See everything alive on the subnet, and act on it.

Sweeping a subnet to see what answers is the first thing most people do on an unfamiliar network, and Advanced IP Scanner and Angry IP Scanner both do it well. CySecTek does the same sweep — ARP, then ICMP, then a TCP knock for hosts that block ping — and reports IP, MAC, vendor, hostname and round-trip time.

Where it differs is what happens next. A discovered host is a starting point, not an answer: you usually want to get onto it, look at what is open on it, or find out which switch port it is patched into. Those are a right-click away in the same window rather than a different tool with the address copied across.

What CySecTek does here

  • Liveness by ARP first, so hosts that drop ICMP still show up — then ICMP, then a knock on 445, 80, 443 and 22.
  • MAC vendor lookup from a bundled OUI table, so it works on an isolated network with no route out.
  • Reverse DNS and NetBIOS names, which fills in the Windows and printer names that have no DNS record.
  • Right-click a host for SSH, SFTP, RDP, ping, traceroute or a port scan against it.
  • The same app also tells you which physical switch port a device is plugged into, read from LLDP or CDP.

When to keep using Advanced IP Scanner

  • Remote shutdown, Wake-on-LAN and remote control features — CySecTek has none of these.
  • Browsing a discovered host's shared folders.
  • Scanning from something other than Windows.

Questions

Does it find hosts that block ping?
Usually. ARP works at layer 2 and does not care whether ICMP is filtered, so anything on the same segment answers. Off-segment hosts that block ping get a TCP knock on a few common ports.
Does the vendor lookup need internet access?
No. The OUI table is bundled, which matters because the networks worth scanning are often the ones with no route out.
How large a range can it scan?
Up to a /16 for the IP scanner. The port scanner caps a single scan at 4096 hosts, because every one of those gets a full port scan.
